about

Maria Niwa is a multi-instrumentalist, live-loop artist and singer-songwriter. She uses acoustic instruments and digital tools, making them organically merge into a kaleidoscopic unity. Inspired by nature, she creates ethereal sonic landscapes as well as activist hymns for change and community, for visionary fantasy as well as rooting down into the present.

With musical experience from a wide range of genres and settings, from classical forms such as orchestra and vocal ensemble, to pop and ambient or experimental sound art, she draws on these influences to create a richly textured musical language.

Formerly a member of Tikkle Me, a feminist synth-pop band with over 100 million streams on Spotify, she has also played in supporting bands for artists like Kieli, Matilda Wiezell (of Melby), and Elsa Esmeralda. She has performed live on radio (among other occasions for a Chambertronica festival, hosted by the show ”Ström” on SR P2), and her performance at Nobel Dialogue Week was livestreamed on SvtPlay.

Currently based in Malmö, in the bioregion of Öresund.
